The St. Raphael fund assists the military and their families in meeting needs
not supported in other ways. It was born through the travels and experiences of
Most Rev. Paul Swain as he came to know eastern South Dakota and discovered how
many families are impacted by someone serving away from home.
"South Dakota has so many brave and generous men and women offering their time
and their lives in defense of our country in order to give those around the
world the opportunity to live in freedom. Our Lord said and lived the words;
'There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.' All
people gifted by God with life are our friends, and those in the military
witness to it. Their families serve with them through the sacrifice of
separation. Whatever one's view of the policy they carry out, they deserve our
prayers and our caring support."
While there are a number of fine support services available for military members
and their families, sometimes families can be helped by a particular opportunity
to be together or communicate with each other, attend a retreat, or receive
counseling on coping with daily stress - and that is where the St. Raphael Fund
can help. Access to funds for these purposes encourages healthy families and are
a sign of our care for those who serve, according to Bishop Swain.
Applications for funds can be sent to:
