Updates on the administration of the Diocese of Sioux Falls

August 13, 2025
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with praise and thanksgiving that I write to share with you that I was notified last night by the Apostolic Nunciature that my request to return as bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls was granted by the Holy See. Because of my health recovery and readiness to return, my episcopal duties were reinstated and Bishop Kettler’s duties ceased upon receipt of the letter from the Apostolic Nunciature dated August 12.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep respect and profound gratitude to Bishop Kettler for his willingness to come out of retirement and accept the responsibility asked of him to serve as Apostolic Administrator. His ministry, compassion and fulfillment of episcopal duties for the people of the diocese these past few months have been a tremendous gift. I am grateful to Bishop Kettler and those who assisted him.
This time away has given me a great desire to be back home with all of you and the faithful of the diocese. I joyfully anticipate celebrating the 4 p.m. Mass this Saturday at the Cathedral.
I return with great joy and look forward to leading the diocese as we strive to become God’s missionary disciples.

Memorial of Saint Joseph the Worker

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Easter Blessings to you all. First, I wanted to provide you with an update on the health of Bishop Donald DeGrood. As you are aware, he has been undergoing medical care for some health concerns over the past few weeks. With the persistence of his migraines, Bishop DeGrood has realized that he needs more time to heal and work with medical professionals, requiring him to remain outside of the diocese.

Thus, Bishop DeGrood has asked the Papal Nuncio to designate a temporary administrator to the Diocese of Sioux Falls and his request has been accepted. Bishop-emeritus of Saint Cloud, the Most Reverend Donald Kettler, has been provisionally entrusted pastoral governance of the Diocese of Sioux Falls. He will enjoy the rights, faculties and responsibilities that Church law gives to an Apostolic Administrator, until such time as the new Holy Father otherwise provides.

Thank you for your prayers as Bishop Kettler and the diocesan staff continue to work to support the needs of the diocese. As always, please continue to pray for the health and well-being of Bishop DeGrood.

Sincerely, Reverend Andrew Young
