Father Daniel Smith

Our featured priest this month is Father Daniel Smith. Father Smith was ordained on May 28, 2010, at Sacred Heart Parish in Aberdeen, since the Cathedral of Saint Joseph was under construction during that time. He was born in Pierre and has one brother and two sisters. He currently serves as chaplain at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

How did you get your call to the priesthood?

Interesting question. I was about 8 years old and taking a bath in our old farmhouse, and my mother came in to check on me. I remember covering myself and looking up at her and saying, “I think I will be a priest someday.”

What did you do before the priesthood?

Before priesthood, I was a college graduate, a farmer and rancher for six years and a substitute teacher, plus I was a banker for six years.

Is there a particular part of Catholicism that really fascinates you?

I wouldn’t say there is a particular part that fascinates me since all of Catholicism is fascinating. However, the Eucharist, prayer and the phrase “never deny, seldom affirm, but always make distinctions” seem to always resonate with me.

Who was most influential in your life?

I have always wondered how I would answer this question. My mother and father and my siblings were very influential, especially since we grew up on a rural farm and ranch 10 miles south of Presho. We spent a lot of time together. I would also have to say that my teachers and elders played a big part. I have always liked to learn from other people’s experiences. However, the Holy Spirit played a big role as well and still does to this day.

What’s your favorite part of being a priest?

My favorite part of being a priest is administering the sacraments. Confecting the Eucharist, hearing confessions and baptizing seem to rise to the top of this list.

What’s the most challenging thing?

One of the most challenging things seems to be knowing what to say, and when or if you should say it.

Who is your go-to saint? Why?

Mary is who I look to the most since I always felt comfortable praying with my own mother, and I could go to her at any time for help and advice. I also look to St. John Vianney, since he is the patron saint for parish priests, and St. Nicholas, since his feast day is on my birthday, Dec. 6. By the way, I am still accepting belated birthday gifts.
